August 11, 2006: New York Yankees vs. LA Angels at Yankee Stadium
Our trip to one of the grandest cathedrals in all of sports started with a “scenic” subway ride to the South Bronx , the home of Yankee Stadium. After narrowly missing our transfer and venturing deep into the South Bronx (and no doubt avoiding some type of near death experience) we boarded the subway for our final leg of the journey to the most famous of all baseball theatres. Aboard our train was none other than Freddy Sez. Freddy is without a doubt one of the Yankees most die-hard supporters with his assortment of encouraging signs, and is now one of its most famous being part of a recent MasterCard commercial. After arriving and catching our first glimpse of the Stadium, we settled in for a couple pre-game bevies at Stan's. THE BAR for Yankee pre-game arm bending. After re-fueling at Stan's we headed into undoubtedly one of the greatest venues in all of sports. Our seats were good, up high down the third base line. We had a great time at the game, even though the Yankees lost 7-2. I thought the call-out of each starting Yankee by the bleacher creatures was particularly entertaining and was a tradition I was not aware of. I particularly enjoyed my conversation with a New York City police officer during which she repeatedly reminded me to not hang around the neighborhood after the game nor come back to the area during non-game days. Good idea. The evening ended with a trip to Times Square and a stop at the ESPN Zone.

August 13, 2006: New York Yankees vs. LA Angels at Yankee Stadium

Monument ParkSunday's trip to Yankee Stadium started with a trip to Monument Park a must for any first time visitor to the stadium. It truly is amazing the number of baseball greats who have donned the Yankee pinstripes over the better part of the past century. We splurged on Sunday's tickets, and had great seats in the lower deck behind home plate. We were looking forward to a Yankee victory but Chien Ming Wang got roughed up for 4 in the first much to the chagrin of the several thousand Taiwanese fans on hand. And the Yankee bats were never able to get on track with the exception of a late A-Rod homerun as the Yanks fell 4-1. Filing out to the strains of New York New York , we agreed that there really is no better place to spend a sunny afternoon than grand old Yankee Stadium.

The Greatest...

Greatest Place for Pre-game Festivities: Stan's

Greatest Place for Post-game Festivities: Anywhere outside of the South Bronx

Greatest Stadium Tradition: Call out by bleacher creatures of each Yankee starter during the top of the first. They will not stop chanting each player's name until each starter acknowledges them.

Greatest Stadium Freebie: Monument Park which honors all Yankee greats. A must for any first-time visitor.

Greatest Food & Drink: Brian had a pretty good Italian sausage which he washed down with a $9 Bud Light. Heather had a cake that was decorated with the Yankee logo, it looked cool, but tasted like a bad lemon birthday cake.

Most Picturesque Part of the Stadium: The front with that large Yankee Stadium sign which we've seen literally thousands of times on television.

Greatest fun we had while in New York: Statue of Liberty, Dinner in Little Italy, Tavern on the Green for dinner, Beauty and the Beast Broadway Show and breakfast in Times Square.

Sports Illustrated said....

No sports arena in history, with the possible exception of the Roman Colosseum, has played host to a wider variety of memorable events. Two popes prayed here, Johnny Unitas threw here, Jim Brown ran here, Joe Louis fought here, and Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio played here. Ground can't get more hallowed than that.
