In 1959, when Lee Perry won a photo finish in the inaugural Daytona 500, drivers were not yet cognizant of the aerodynamic phenomenon that made that race --- and all races on this 2.5-mile oval --- spectacular. It was and is the draft, which has led to many mad dashes for the checkered flag.
